Andolini's is a popular "New York style" pizza chain in the Charleston area, with locations in West Ashley, Mount Pleasant, Downtown Charleston and a James Island location.
Founded in 1991, Andolini's Pizza is owned and operated by the Rabin family. Michael, the founder, was born in Queens, New York, and his brother, Neil, was born in Brooklyn, hence the New York Style pizza. According to their website, Edie, Michael's wife, makes the dough and Neil is the "chief cook and bottle washer." The restaurants are known for their colorful and unique decorations.
At Andolini's, they make their own thin and crispy crust, grate the cheese in house (this is important, as pre-grated cheese has cornstarch and chemicals added to stop clumping, this also affects the flavor) and make a tomato sauce with herbs and even chunks of tomato, that is lacking the bitter, acidic flavor of most pizza sauces. Of particular note is their sausage which is real Italian sausage, with a great depth of flavor. They are heavy handed with the toppings, no scrimping here.
They win the "Best Pizzaria" award each year from The City Paper when they do the "Best of Charleston Awards". Dogs are welcome to join their people on the deck at the Mt. Pleasant location and the patio of the West Ashley location.
