Ansonborough Field
From CharlestonWiki
Now referred to as Concord Park, Ansonborough Field is the greenspace between Concord and Washington Streets and bordered on the north by Calhoun Street. The land was neighbor to a coalification plant for many years. Many years after that plant was gone, the site hosted a housing project for a number of years that went into a sorry state of disrepair and suffered frequent flooding. Upon the discovery of pollutants in the soil, the housing was demolished and the few occupants who remained relocated to scattered-site housing. A documentary is available at the Avery Research Center and features many Charlestonians, including Herb Frasier.
Currently: "Ansonborough Field is 12 acres of greenspace, close to the Aquarium. The Mayor wants to develop the north and south ends of the Field to provide for possibly retailing, restaurants and condominiums. Others, conscious of the limited amount of greenspace in the city, want the Field preserved as a park. The site falls in a flood zone and FEMA regulations prohibit habitation on the ground floor. As well, the site is polluted and needs treatment. To overcome FEMA regulations, the City has raised the building height limitation in the area from 55' to 70'." --Charleston Watch
Most of the land will remain open space under the current development plans.
