The Arthur Ravenel Bridge is a large eight-lane bridge connecting downtown and Mt. Pleasant. It replaced the old Grace and Pearman bridges. Unlike the previous bridges, the Ravenel bridge has a pedestrian walkway that allows foot and bicycle traffic over the bridge.

Tourists take note: parking on the Mount Pleasant side is free and sometimes hard to find. It's on the road to Patriot's Point. The walk up from there is tiring, about half a mile, and totally worth it. A CARTA bus runs from downtown Visitor's Centre to Patriot's Point with one stop at the foot of the bridge coming down, and one stop elsewhere for returning.

The Ravenel bridge (as were its predecessors) is home to the Cooper River Bridge Run, held annually in April.

The bridge is named for Arthur Ravenel, a politician who played an important role in getting funding for the bridge's construction.

The bridge, unlike most public construction projects, was completed under time and under budget.
