CharlestonWiki:Editorial Control

This page contains a description of the self imposed limits of the administrators in the area of editorial control.

Editors in the Wiki World

On a wiki everyone is an editor. Anyone who thinks a page should be added or changed can do so as they see appropriate. However, there will always be those who will attempt to vandalise. These users, while few in number, will try to thwart the hard work of the majority. The hope is that since everyone is an editor, articles that are vandalised will not remain in that state for long before someone finds the problem and fixes it. In most cases action by one of the administrators will not be necessary.

Necessary Cases

There will be some cases where a large amount of the community is divided on how a topic should be presented. There may also be cases in which an article is the victim of frequent vandalism. In these cases it may be necessary for one of the administrators to protect a page (prevent editing by anyone) or to remove the page entirely and prevent it from being created again. See the controversial topics section for more information on how a controversial page is handled (before action is necessary on the part of the administrators).

Also, it may be necessary to remove an article/image/media due to copyright infringement (see the copyrights page) or illegality.

The pages relating to policy are protected as accepted community standards.

Self-imposed Boundaries

As a general rule, nothing will ever be deleted. The only times an article will be removed entirely is if there is inappropriate or irrelavent content (blantant examples of spam or vandalism) that should not, in the collective opinion of the administrators, be viewed by anyone. In cases of merely protecting a page, reasoning will be given on the talk page (see the talk pages section).
