Expansion

The enrollment at the College of Charleston has signficantly increased over the past twenty years. Institutional Research facts indicate that the student population grew from 6778 in Fall 1989 to 11332 in Fall 2005. To support the growing number of students, the College has bought or constructed several new buildings in recent years. These include a purchase of the old Bellsouth building on St. Phillips Street for classoroms and offices; purchase and demolition of Bishop England High School (which was lured to Daniel Island) at the corner of Coming Street and Calhoun Street to build the Addlestone Library; purchase and demolition of the Arcade Theater, an old movie theater and dance club on Liberty Street, to expand the School of Business & Economics; and most recently, a controversial purchase of the site at the corner of St. Philips Street and Wentworth Street where Yo Burrito was previously located.
