The College of Charleston commencement exercises are held annually in December and May, at the end of each academic semester. The College of Charleston graduation ceremony is unique in that students do not wear traditional academic regalia. Instead, male students wear tuxedos and female students wear dresses. For the December graduation, black tuxes are worn by males and black dresses are worn by females, while in May, white tuxedo jackets with black pants are worn by males and white dresses are worn by females.

May graduation is held on the College of Charleston cistern. For many years, May graduation was held on Mother's day, with students receiving a rose to present to their mother. There is also an urban legend that it never rains on Mother's day in Charleston, and thus never rains on the College of Charleston commencement. It did however, rain during graduation 1995, and likely other years as well.
