The United States Congressional Medal of Honor is the highest possible award a U.S. serviceman can obtain. It is given for distinct bravery in battle against an enemy force. The first medals of honor were given to members of the Navy in 1861. There are now three types of medals given - one used by the Navy, Marines, and Coast Guard; one by the Air Force; and one by the Army.
The Congressional Medal of Honor Museum is located aboard the USS Yorktown near the main entrance on the hangar deck. It details the history of the medal during eight periods, starting from the Civil War. A list of all recipients, as well as relevant and timely documents and items, are viewable. The museum is open from 9-5 during the fall/winter and 9-6 during the spring/summer.
