Downtown Charleston is located on a peninsula between the Ashley and Cooper Rivers. The original British settlement of Charlestowne was further north on the Ashley river. In 1680, it moved to its current location. Today, Downtown serves as the central business district of Greater Charleston. Many historic sites, buildings and cultural facilities are located here. The Citadel, College of Charleston, and The Medical University of South Carolina are the colleges located on the Penisula.
