Folly Beach
From CharlestonWiki
Folly Beach, which calls itself "The Edge of America", is one of the three major beach locations close to Charleston, SC (the other two being Sullivan's Island and Isle of Palms). Geographic and population information concerning Folly Beach can be found at the wikipedia article on Folly Beach.
There is one major hotel located on Folly Beach, the Holiday Inn Charleston-On The Beach. This hotel is ocean front and is at the end of Center Street, the main road on Folly. Behind the hotel is the recently constructed Folly Beach Pier, which houses a restaurant, a gift shop, and is available to the public for recreation and ocean fishing. Most of the houses on Folly Beach can be rented. Rental companies include Folly Island Realty, Fred Holland Realty, and Islands West Realty.
At the East end of Folly Beach (closest to Downtown Charleston) lies an abandoned Coast Guard Station now open to the public, while the West end is the home to Folly Beach County Park. The Coast Guard Station provides views of the Morris Island Lighthouse, which is slowly being overtaken by the ocean. The currents on the East end prevent swimming, but the rest of the beach access areas are swimmable. Folly is well known as a surfing destination in Charleston, with the Folly Beach Washout being a prime location.
Folly Beach is accessible from Downtown Charleston by taking Calhoun Street to the James Island Connector (Highway 30), following the connector until it ends at Folly Road, turning left onto Folly Road, and then continuing for approximately 7 miles.
