The Folly Beach Washout, the thinnest part of Folly Beach, is known as the best surfing location in the Charleston area. The area around the Folly Beach Pier is also popular for surfing. Typical swells are in the 2 to 3 foot range. Parking is available on the street near the Washout, but the area becomes quite crowded during the summer. In addition to surfing, the area is popular for ocean front access and is adjacent to a large number of beach houses.

The Washout has hosted several recent (summer 2006) tournaments, including the female Folly Beach Wahine Classic and the Eastern Surfing Association Mid-Atlantic Region Surfing Championships.

Location

The Washout is near the east end of Folly Beach. This area is accessible by following Ashley Avenue east from Center Street.
