Fort Moultrie, located on Sullivan's Island, is a historical fort which played significant roles in both the Revolutionary War and Civil War. There have been three forts built on the same location. The current fort was built in 1809 and has gone under several rounds of modernization. The Fort became a United States National Monument after World War II and is managed by the National Park Service. Outside the fort are cannons pointing into Charleston Harbor.

Visiting the Fort

Self-guided tours of the fort are available year round. Fort Moultrie can be reached by driving to Sullivan's Island, making a right onto Middle Street, and driving a mile and a half. A Visitor's Center is adjacent to the fort, providing restrooms and historical information. Fees for the Visitor's Center are: $5.00 for a family, $3.00 for adults, $1.00 for seniors, and free for children under 16. The Visitor's Center is open every day except New Years, Christmas, and Thanksgiving.

Trivia

Edgar Allan Poe, the American writer, was briefly stationed at Fort Moultrie in the 1820's.

The sturdiness of the original fort, built out of palmetto logs, was the motivation for the inclusion of the palmetto tree on the South Carolina state flag.
