The Francis Marion Hotel opened in 1924. It was built by local investors at a cost of 1.5 million dollars and was the grandest hotel of its time in downtown Charleston. It was recently restored in 1996 by a 12 million dollar grant. It is 12 stories high and has 226 guestrooms. The park overlooks Marion Square at the corner of King Street and Calhoun Street. The hotel is named after famous General Francis Marion (also known as The Swamp Fox)
