Introduction

Here are a few examples of when you might want to start a new page:

• if you cannot find the page and think it should exist on this wiki
• if you have specific knowledge about a topic and want to contribute new content

Check for Uniqueness

The first step is to make sure the page (or one like it) doesn't already exist. First, try searching for variations on the topic you wish to add. Search for information related to it as well. You may find a page that is quite similar and it may be better to just add content to an existing page. Also, look through the list of categories for an applicable category. Look through the page listings for each related category for a page that may already have relavent content. If you cannot find one, the next step is to actually create the page.

Create Page

Lets say you want to create a page on the topic Foo Bar. In the search box type in Foo Bar and press the "Go" button (see Best Practices - Naming for information on naming articles). Then click on the link that says Create this page. You'll be presented with a large textbox. See Editing Help for instructions on wiki formatting (how to make things bold, add tables, etc.). It's also generally a good idea to play in a Sandbox first. If you wish to add an image or other media file, check the Special:Imagelist for an existing image that may work. If there are none, then you can upload one on the upload page. There are instructions on that page that explain how to embed the image in your page. Then, you will probably wish to add a category (see Category Help for more information).

Sandboxes

A sandbox is a safe place to play. A sandbox page is a page that doesn't really matter, and it only exists for you to do testing. You can try different wiki formatting techniques and just expirament. Generally, you'll only need a single sandbox page. You can make one by using http://charlestonwiki.org/Sandbox:MYNAME where MYNAME is your username. See Sandbox:BrianMuller for an example.

Note: You should keep references to other pages and categories (like "[[Example Page]]" and "[[Category:Some Category]]") out of your sandbox as much as possible. These do show up on the Special:Wantedpages / Special:Wantedcategories pages.
