J. C. Long

J. C. (John Charles) Long (1903-1984) was a prominent public figure in the 20th century history of Charleston, SC. As a teenager, he moved with his family to Charleston in 1918 and attended the High School of Charleston. Trained as a lawyer at the University of South Carolina, Long played an important role in founding many businesses in the Charleston area. One of the most famous was The Beach Company, the company essentially responsible for developing the Isle of Palms after buying 1300 acres of land on the island.

His public service to the Charleston area includes significant assistance in preserving the Four Corners of Law and in pursuing significant widening of Highway 17 in Mount Pleasant.
