Paolo's Gelato

Paolo Dalla Zorza opened the Charleston location, his second gelateria in the United States last October following the success of his first store in Atlanta, which opened in 2000.

Paolo’s gelato is not to be mistaken for fruit sorbets, or “Italian ices.” His creamy concoctions — 12 different flavors made fresh daily — are more similar to ice cream than fruit-and-water sorbets, but lighter and creamier in texture than ice cream. Unlike ice cream, which is made from milk fat, Paolo’s gelato is made from vegetable fat, a fact which he hopes will appeal to those unfortunate fans of ice cream who are also lactose intolerant.

Every day, Paolo and his staff whip up a dozen fresh blends of gelato from a range of 62 different flavors, including rose, pistachio, cappuccino, tiramisu, chocolate, lemon, strawberry, blueberry, hazelnut, grand marnier, kiwi and mango. Each week, he sends Flavor Alert e-mails to customers on his mailing list to inform them of new flavors available in the store. Some flavors are also available sugarfree. Paolo’s is decorated with wooden cabinetry and tiles custom- made in Italy, and his store shelves are filled with authentic Italian treats, including boxes of imported biscotti, jars of Nutella spread and candies. He also sells a variety of espresso coffees, imported sodas and marzapane, fruit juices, still and sparkling waters, and other unique desserts. Paolo’s also caters special events.

Soon Paolo’s will be promoting its products with feline mascot Gato Gelato.
