South Carolina Unorganized Militia
From CharlestonWiki
The South Carolina Unorganized Militia, according to the SC Code of Laws Section 25-1-60, is one of the three branches of state militia. The three branches consist of the National Guard, the organized militia, and the unorganized militia.
The unorganized militia is relevant to Charleston in that, by Section 25-1-520 of the SC Code of Laws, the board of visitors, administration, and faculty of The Citadel may be designated as commissioned officers in the unorganized militia by the Governor of the state. Their rank in the militia would be relative to their rank at The Citadel. If assigned to duty with the National Guard, an unorganized militia member would rank under all other officers of the same rank actually belonging to the National Guard.
It is to the amusement of the Cadets, the students of The Citadel that their faculty is known, collectively, by the acronym "S.C.U.M."
Finally, Section 25-1-1890 of the SC Code of Laws provides the governor with the right to call the unorganized militia into service, under certain dire situations and when the National Guard has been fully activated.
