The Charleston Farmers Market
From CharlestonWiki
The Charleston Farmer's Market usually operates Saturday from 8:00am until 1:00pm in the months of April to December in Marion Square. See the web site for exact opening and closing information.
The Market features a large assortment of arts & crafts and plenty of vendors serving food. There are excellent options for having breakfast or lunch al fresco while shopping. Omlettes, crepes, Greek gyros, a variety of baked goods, fresh coffee and lemonade are just a few of the weekly offerings. There is a great selection of seasonal fresh fruits and vegetables from a variety of local farmers. One vendor specializes in fresh herbs and plants, another in organic produce. Tomatoes abound in the summer months. While some stalls offer 10 or 12 varieties of vegetables, some specialize in just peaches, or freshly picked berries. Green peanuts, real watermelons, rhubarb, silver queen corn, okra, Johns Island tomatoes and collards are just a few of the delicious vegetables you can find there on Saturday mornings. Pet bakeries are represented, kettle corn pops all morning long and one stand sells freshly made pastas and sauces, ready for you to take home and cook. There is also live music weekly, provided by an assortment of local musicians.
During Spoleto, the art show in Marion Square adds more interest and more people. On the Saturday before Memorial Day, the Piccolo Spoleto Children's Festival is celebrated. Dozens of activities, booths and live shows fill the entire park. The highlight of the day is the parade and concert by Atlanta's Weed and Feed Marching Abominables, a crazy, happy marching band. During the month of December, the Farmer's Market incorporates Christmas items, offering holiday greenery and appropriate pastries and breads. Santa Claus often makes an appearance. There are fewer produce stands in the winter months.
The Farmer's Market is one of the best people watching venues in the city. With great food, drink and shopping, people from all walks of life enjoy The Farmer's Market. Dogs are welcome to come with their people and there is even a doggie water fountain in the park. Since it is a certified "roadside stand" there is no sale tax.
