On Campus

Duty Uniforms

Generally cadets wear the Duty Uniform while attending class and on campus functions. The duty uniform consists of a gray short-sleeved button up shirt, gray pants with the black "Cadet Stripe", and a fore and aft cover or hat. During inclement weather cadets are authorized to "Wear Raincoat". The raincoat uniform adds a basic gray trench coat to the Duty Uniform. During cooler weather, a lightweight field jacket is added to the basic Duty Uniform. During winter, an overcoat is added.

Dress Uniforms

For parades or official functions, cadets are required to wear dress uniforms. These include: Dress Grays, Full Dress Grays, Salt and Pepper, Full Dress Salt and Pepper, and Dress Whites.

Off Campus

First- and second-year cadets wear a military-style uniform consisting of uniform trousers, uniform button-down shirt, and a flat cap. Cadets in the first semester of their third year also wear this uniform. Cadets in the second semester of their third year, as well as fourth-year cadets, are permitted to wear a more casual uniform consisting of a button down shirt, tie, blazer, and slacks.

Cadets may also be seen doing physical training (PT) in Downtown Charleston. The traditional PT uniform, depending on the season, is Citadel blue t-shirts and shorts or Citadel blue sweatpants and shirt with hood.

According to the Citadel Blue Book regulations, cadets are required to wear an appropriate uniform unless they are on weekend or overnight leave and over 25 miles away from the Citadel. Swimwear may be worn once the bridges onto the Isle of Palms or Folly Beach have been crossed.

Location

The original campus of the Citadel was on Marion Square. The old main Citadel building is now an Embassy Suites hotel. The move to the new Ashley River location, shown below, occurred in 1922.
